Holistic Harmony: A TCM Approach to Mental & Emotional Wellness

By: Dr. Gigi Lane, AP, The Healing Points

In today’s fast-paced world, mental and
emotional health challenges are more
common than ever. While modern medicine
offers powerful tools, many people are
turning to ancient systems like Traditional
Chinese Medicine (TCM) for a more holistic,
root-cause approach to well-being.

Understanding the TCM Perspective

Traditional Chinese Medicine is grounded in
the concept of balance—particularly the
balance of energy, or Qi (vital life force),
flowing through the body. Emotional and
mental health, in TCM, are deeply
connected to the health of internal organs
and energetic pathways.
Each primary emotion is associated with a
specific organ system:

  • Liver → Anger, frustration
  • Heart → Joy, overexcitement
  • Spleen → Worry, overthinking
  • Lungs → Grief, sadness
  • Kidneys→ Fear, insecurity

When these organ systems are out of
balance, emotional disturbances may
arise—and vice versa.

Key Approaches to TCM Emotional Wellness
Acupuncture

By stimulating specific points along energy meridians, acupuncture helps regulate Qi flow, calm the nervous system, and reduce symptoms of anxiety, depression, and stress.

Herbal Medicine

Custom herbal formulas are designed to
restore balance. For example, formulas that
soothe the liver may help ease irritability
and mood swings.

Dietary Therapy

Food is medicine in TCM. Warm, nourishing
foods may support the spleen and reduce
overthinking, while cooling foods can help
calm excess heat linked to anxiety.

Mind-Body Therapy

Gentle practices like Tai Chi and Qigong
integrate movement, breath, and
mindfulness—supporting emotional
regulation and inner calm.

Lifestyle Alignment

TCM emphasizes living in harmony with
natural rhythms—sleep cycles, seasonal
changes, and stress management all play a
role in emotional resilience.
